Counselling

How I practice

Person-centred counselling is directed by the client, which means that the counsellor has no power or right to tell the client what to do, or force the client into places s/he does not wish to explore.  The counsellor however is not passive, and will use a variety of skills to connect with the problem issue with the purpose of helping the client better understand him/her self. The support that will be given will be within the time agreed upon by both, and will allow the client to explore whatever issue s/he needs to explore as far as is deemed healing to the client, and be in confidence.

If there is a need for some self-help activity at home then suggestions will be given which the client is free to use, as s/he feels able to.

Whatever culture or religious faith the client practices will not impede the counselling process, and if necessary can be wholeheartedly included.

If there are any questions the client wishes to ask in the course of his/her understanding of their issues there will be total acceptance in place for the freedom of such self- expression.

Self-belief will be encouraged for the healthy development of the innate intelligence that exists at the core of all Beings. This involves honesty and openness, patience and flexibility, during which time changes will take place and a happier state of being will ensue.

Counselling will give full focus and attention to the client through listening and exploring issues of the client at the practical level, the emotional levels, and the thought processes/mind-set of the client. Counselling also reflects on the motives and orientation, and may examine how this development has gone through various stages
to become what it is. Exploration may go into looking at childhood shaping, relational difficulties, work issues or the sense of identity crisis brought about through loss and a host of shocks from unexpected problems including illness.

Every human being is unique, and will be treated as such, not forced into a box or defined in any black and white terms. Counselling works from the recognition that we all have basic needs, which are common to us all, therefore respect will be shown (throughout) for the individual in the client‘s chair.

“The self makes and breaks itself over and over until it knows self is life.”
